What is an intercooler? This is an element installed in cars with supercharged engines. Its structure and operating principle resembles a standard radiator. The intercooler plays a very important role in a vehicle - it cools the air supplied to the car's turbine. We present the most important information about this element and its impact on the operation of the drive unit.

What is Intercooler?

Is it very often used in cars intercooler? What's that is it correct? This is an element that is placed in the intake system of a supercharged engine to reduce the temperature of the intake air. Thanks to this, cold and dense air is supplied to the combustion chamber, which improves the efficiency and performance of the vehicle.

Principle of operation intercooler, as in the case of car radiator, is based on heat exchange between a cool medium, which is air or coolant flowing onto the radiator through the front of the vehicle (water intercooler). The mass that passes through the supercharging system increases in temperature due to the compression created by the compressor. Its increase reduces the air density and thus the oxygen content, which is necessary in the combustion process. Thanks to your presence intercooler, this air can be effectively cooled, thanks to which the engine achieves greater power and efficiency.

What are the symptoms of a leak Intercooler?

When deciding to replace the air cooler in your car, it is worth bearing in mind the problems that may arise during its operation. The most common fault is leakage, which can lead to many problems with the entire intake system of a supercharged engine. Symptoms caused by a damaged or leaking intercooler to the most common:

  • loss of engine power,
  • disturbed combustion process of the fuel-air mixture,
  • characteristic sounds (squeaking or hissing),
  • jerking when accelerating,
  • oiling of the surrounding area intercooler.

If you notice any of these symptoms and warning signs appear lights on the dashboard you must go to a workshop. The specialist will perform appropriate diagnostics of our vehicle and, if necessary, repair or replace the damaged element. Having no experience, you should not attempt to repair the air cooler on your own, as it may result in much more serious problems with the entire intake system. This activity is much more complicated than, for example, a standard supplement windshield washer fluid.

What impact does it have Intercooler on engine power?

What is an intercooler?

Many people wonder what is an intercooler and what is its impact on engine power. As it turns out, this relationship is very large. The presence of this element in the car has a direct impact on the engine power in supercharged units, because, as previously mentioned, intercooler is a device whose task is to cool the air before it enters the combustion chamber. By cooling it, the oxygen content increases, which in turn contributes to a more efficient combustion process and increased engine power.

There are many types of air coolers on the market. It stands out, among others: intercoolers type SMIC (installed in one or both sides of the vehicle) and FMIC (single-sided intercooler front mounted). The second type is much more popular and usually has a larger working surface. Thanks to its location at the front of the car intercooler has easier access to more cool air.

Czy Intercooler does it affect fuel consumption in the car?

The air cooler affects not only engine power, but also fuel consumption, which is extremely important for many drivers. Too high a temperature of compressed air may lead to undesirable detonation of the mixture, which is very harmful to the power unit. Intercooler effectively solves this problem by lowering the air temperature before supplying it to the combustion chamber. This solution increases engine efficiency.

This type of solution is becoming more and more common on the market single-sided intercooler. This is a type of cooling device worth mentioning. It turns out that their efficiency is lower compared to double-sided coolers because they are characterized by a greater drop in air pressure at the cooler outlet. So if you want the highest efficiency and best combustion, choose the double-sided version.

What are the dangers of driving with a damaged one? Intercooler?

What is an intercooler?

Symptoms of damaged intercooler should not be underestimated. Driving with a malfunctioning component can lead to many problems and, in the worst case, serious damage to the engine, which is one of the most expensive components to repair. The consequences of driving with a damaged air cooler include:

  • a noticeable drop in engine power, which most often results from an increase in air temperature, which reduces the amount of oxygen supplied to the combustion chamber,
  • increased fuel consumption resulting from the engine working harder to provide adequate power,
  • engine damage resulting from it overheating,
  • deterioration of performance due to uneven engine operation,
  • problems with the injection system that often occur when the air temperature is too high.

In the context of the damage that may happen to us, it is worth mentioning its possible occurrence oil in the intercooler. This is one of the most common problems reported by users. This oil usually comes from a malfunctioning pneumothorax and other components of the charging system. A small amount of oil should not worry us, but if there is too much of it, it may be a symptom of e.g. worn out oil. compressors.
