Rodents and others have been considered pests for years. They used to make life miserable for farmers, but today wild animals are a nightmare for drivers. Mice, rats, martens, weasels and other small mammals (even cats!) like to use the heat emitted by the engine of a car that has just been turned off. When they find such comfortable living conditions, they can also cause considerable damage. Therefore, it is worth purchasing a repellent for martens and other animals.

From the article below you will learn:

  • what damage can a marten cause to a car,
  • how to fight this pest with home remedies,
  • what marten repellents can be found in stores.

Can martens damage our car?

Marten repellent

The presence of any animals under the hood or undercarriage of the car is inadvisable, and this applies not only to martens. In winter, before starting the vehicle, it is worth tapping the hood several times, or even opening it, to see if there is a cat or a cat warming itself in the engine compartment. another being. You should remember this not only for the safety of your animals, but also for the sake of your car. Practice shows that the effects of the presence of animals under the hood can be deplorable. Here we can distinguish:

  • destruction of electrical, fuel and coolant lines by rodents and mustelids (martens) - especially the latter, they tend to instinctively bite anything they can get their hands on;
  • drilling holes in the acoustic insulation of the hood and engine compartment – animals, looking for warmth, like to take shelter under fluffy layers of insulation;
  • mechanical damage - when starting the engine, animals unaware of the danger may be attracted by numerous moving elements under the hood. Only cleaning up the resulting mess this is the smallest problem - this situation may lead to damage to tensioner rollers, belts, etc., which may immobilize the car for good and result in a serious breakdown;
  • animals like to build nests in cars – this especially applies to rodents that can nest in the lining or in the air filter housing. Therefore, it is worth checking these places from time to time, because rodents store their supplies there.

Car repellent should counteract the above problems.

What is a marten repellent – anti-marten?

A deterrent for martens and other animals is nothing more than an electrical device or a chemical repellent intended to scare the creature away from the car or discourage it from biting its parts, e.g. by taste or smell.

What types of marten repellents are there?

The following types of mammal repellents are available on the market:

  1. Electric repellers

The electric rodent and marten repeller can be powered by the vehicle's electrical system or can operate on batteries or a rechargeable accumulator. It emits sounds that are inaudible or barely audible to the human ear, repelling animals.

The disadvantage of this solution is its dependence on electricity - it will either be taken from the vehicle's battery, which... longer stop may result in discharge, or you will have to remember to replace the battery or periodically connect it to the charger.

  1. Chemical repellent

It most often comes in the form of an aerosol. It is a collection of various scents intended to repel animals. It can be applied to the wires in the engine compartment and the hood soundproofing. Once soaked in, it should discourage martens from visiting your car. Unfortunately, the intensity of the scent decreases over time, so you will have to repeat the treatment from time to time.

What should you consider when choosing a marten repellent?

Remember that no method gives a 100% guarantee that some desperate animal will not get under the hood. Moreover, the more universal a method is, the less effective it may seem. It's best to recognize what pest you're dealing with - is it really a marten? Or maybe a rat or a cat? Knowing who you are fighting against, you will be able to use a method appropriate to the problem, e.g. dedicated rat repellents.

Also remember that in most cases, nocturnal animals seek shelter under the hood. Cars parked in the evening are therefore more vulnerable to marten attacks.

Do home remedies work to deter martens?

There are many home methods for fighting animals under the hood. None of them will guarantee that the pest will be dealt with. The most popular include:

  • cube-pendant for the toilet bowl – this is a solution used by many drivers, it is cheap, so it is worth trying it before resorting to more radical measures. The smell of the cube is distinct even to us - humans, let alone animals that have an even more sensitive sense of smell. For many of them, toilet chemicals are unbearable.
  • cat or dog hair – apparently this method works. Placing dog or cat hair under the hood will fill the surroundings with the smell of animals that martens do not like. Unfortunately, pests can get used to the aroma and start ignoring it, and the fur needs to be replaced from time to time when it becomes stale.
  • parking the car in the garage – this is probably the most effective way, unfortunately not everyone can afford it. Isolating the vehicle from the surroundings will certainly protect it from encountering a marten and its destructive teeth.
