GPS? Modern drivers often cannot imagine driving without navigation. It provides not only information about the best route to a selected point, but also about road accidents, speed limits and the location of speed cameras. Where does GPS get its data, how does it work and how to use it effectively?
- GPS is a satellite navigation system that we usually use to determine the best route.
- Car GPS works thanks to the work of approximately 30 satellites. To use navigation, you need a GPS module in your device.

What is GPS?

Let's start from the beginning, that is, by explaining what GPS is. GPS is a satellite navigation system, or more precisely, the global positioning system. It is a device that shows the way to a specific location. Interestingly, the history of GPS is that this system was created for the American military. It was the time of the Cold War. It was originally intended to be used to determine the geographical location of objects and height above sea level. It works by communicating with approximately 30 satellites that orbit the earth. Over time, it was approved for civilian use.
Where does car GPS get its data?

Where do we get the data in our navigation? Well Car GPS uses data from satellitesthat orbit around the Earth. These devices send a radio signal. The receiver calculates the time that has passed since the signal was generated until it was received. Based on this, the equipment can accurately determine its position.
Satellites in Earth orbit have been arranged so that each device equipped with a GPS system is always within the range of at least 4 of them. Thanks to this, you can precisely determine the location of your smartphone or on-board computer in the car. Satellites are replaced regularly - the operating period of these devices is approximately 11 years.

Car GPS navigation

Even though I'm alone GPS serves many functions, it is most often used in car navigation. This system quickly replaced traditional maps. This is primarily due to the fact that it allows not only precise determination of the vehicle's position. In addition, it allows us to check road passability, availability of routes for specific types of cars and time to reach the destination.
Car GPS navigation collects information about the vehicle's location from satellites orbiting the Earth. Then it is plotted on the map in the application. This is why navigation is so important during traveling by car around Europe.
Important! Navigation only works on devices equipped with GPS module. This is a receiver that receives signals from satellites. Currently, such modules are installed in both smartphones and on-board computers in cars.
What data does GPS collect?

Just showing the way is not everything. GPS devices also collect data on road accidents, attractions in the area, traffic intensity or public transport. Thanks to this, the user has access to a complete map of the city, updated every few minutes. In addition, we have access to data about speed, direction, distance traveled and distance to the destination, sunrise and sunset times, and more. Additionally, we sometimes have the option of setting the route so that save fuel while traveling. However, we do not use many of the navigation functions during everyday trips.
How to use car GPS effectively?

Now that you know how GPS works in a car, check how you can use it most effectively. When planning your route, follow a few rules:
- update maps – some applications update automatically. In the case of offline maps, however, you must remember to regularly download the latest versions, which contain information about current road renovations, newly opened routes, etc.;
- use the traffic information function - this way you will avoid traffic jams and roadworks. Modern GPS systems offer alternative routes;
- activate additional functions - warning about speed cameras, the ability to save favorite routes, etc.;
- use route settings - in navigation you can set, for example, avoidance of toll roads, tunnels and ferries, or passage for cars weighing over 3,5 tons,
- be open to alternative routes - modern GPS units work very efficiently, so they can suggest alternative routes immediately after noticing problems with the passability of the previously recommended road. In many cases, you don't need to turn around - if you go the wrong way, the navigation will immediately show you an updated, different route.
- focus on the road and don't trust GPS 100% - there are known cases of people who blindly trusted the navigation and drove into a lake. For this reason, it is worth having a classic one with you road map, which will show you the correct path in such a situation.
Attention! In some countries, it is illegal to use applications that provide information about the location of police patrols or speed cameras. When traveling in such countries, you must turn off these functions.
Smartphone holders and car navigation
For the convenience of use Car GPS it also affects whether you can see the map while driving. New car models are equipped with: infotainment system with a screen on the dashboard that displays the road and the current position of the car. However, if your vehicle does not have such a monitor, you can invest in a special smartphone holder. The use of such an accessory complies with road traffic regulations. It will work well, for example: Moje Auto Virage Magnetic phone holder for the air vent.

This holder is mounted on the air vent, thanks to which the phone does not restrict visibility through the glass. At the same time, it remains within the driver's control range, which makes it easier to follow navigation recommendations. The product requires that the smartphone has a built-in magnet and a housing with a metal plate.
