Preparing your car for winter is not just about changing tires and winter windshield washer fluid. Additionally, you should buy accessories that will help you deal with frosted windows. Today, instead of a scraper, we increasingly use a spray windshield defroster. Is it right?

Why is it worth using a window defroster?

Car window defroster it is, above all, comfort and convenience. If we use a good quality preparation, window defrosting fluid allows you to quickly and effectively remove ice from the windshield or mirror.

Just spray the windshield with defrosting agent, wait a while and remove the ice from the windshield using wipers or a squeegee. Using a defroster will prevent the windows from scratching, which can be caused by an ice scraper. The wipers and seals remain undamaged.

Window defroster vs. scraper – which is better?

The biggest advantage of the scraper is its low price. However, it is not very effective. In addition, scraping the windows may scratch them and damage the wipers or seals in the car windows.

The defroster is more expensive, but more effective, especially at extremely low temperatures below -20 degrees Celsius. Frost must be removed from the windshield, rear window, side windows and mirrors. If the layer is thicker, removing it with a scraper is time-consuming, inconvenient and increases the risk of damaging the windshield or wiper.

What should you pay attention to when choosing a window defroster?

Frozen windows are a problem faced by every motorist who parks their car outdoors in winter without using the car. special covers or window mats. Most often, we remove frost using a scraper, but it is faster, more efficient and more convenient to use a specialized preparation. So which window defroster will be the best?

When choosing, you should pay attention to, among others: on the type of windshield defrosting fluid. Currently, we distinguish two types of such products, i.e.:

  • Window defroster spray – a cheaper version of the window defroster. Most often, the product is available in containers with a capacity of 750-1000 ml. Its advantage is quick and simple application in favorable weather conditions. Just shake the defroster and then apply the preparation to the windshield. The application of the agent is difficult due to strong wind. Spray window cleaner may also lose its properties at low temperatures, when the pressure of the compressed gas drops. Be especially careful with cheap products that leave unaesthetic streaks on the windows.
  • Window defroster atomizer – liquid sprayed using a hand-controlled pump. The de-icer in the form of an atomizer guarantees more precise application in strong winds. It does not lose its properties under the influence of low temperatures and does not leave streaks.

In addition to the form of the defroster, attention should be paid to the parameters of the windshield defroster fluid in the car, i.e.:

  • Temperature range – temperature range in which the defroster can be used. There are products available on the market that can be used at frosts of up to -60 degrees Celsius.
  • Content of degreasers and other substances – window defroster may have different compositions. More expensive defrosters degrease and protect the windows against intense freezing and dirt accumulation. In turn, additional substances protect them against scratching, which is easy to do when using a scraper.
  • Security – good quality defrosters do not damage the structure of car paint, seals, wipers and other plastic elements.
  • Visibility – the more fatty substances in the defroster, the greater the risk of impaired visibility.

Are there any disadvantages to using window defroster?

Window defroster is basically free from any disadvantages. If it is an atomizer from a reputable manufacturer, it will serve the driver successfully regardless of the weather conditions. Such a defroster will help remove ice from the windows and protect them against dirt, ice and snow.

However, the spray de-icer has some disadvantages. Using low-priced windshield defrosters may result in streaks. In turn, strong wind makes their application difficult. Nevertheless, even in the cheapest version, the defroster still has an advantage over the scraper.

Of course, products for defrosting windows and locks should not be equated. Such savings do not pay off. Application on windows lock defroster may damage them.

Home remedies for defrosting – how to make a window defroster?

In addition to specialized defrosters, we can prepare our own agent. A homemade idea for windshield defroster can be made by combining a glass of lukewarm water and three glasses of vinegar. Applying this mixture to the windows is not as effective as using a defroster, but it helps remove frost. However, a side effect of such a mixture is the unpleasant, suffocating smell of vinegar.

Another home remedy is to combine lukewarm water with alcohol in identical proportions. However, this mixture is less effective against frozen windows.

However, it is a mistake to pour warm water over the frosted glass. It's as ineffective as any other home remedies to deal with frozen windows. Even though hot water melts ice, a large temperature difference may cause the glass to crack.

Opinions about the window defroster are most often favorable. If it is a high-class product from a reputable supplier, it will certainly be able to defrost the windows even at extremely low temperatures, which we also occasionally experience in Poland, especially in the mountains and the Suwałki region. The best are sprays that defrost the windows and protect them against re-freezing.

Of course, you should use defrosters according to your needs and preferences. Therefore, those who are more economical can choose cheaper spray deicers. Although they may leave streaks, they are still much more effective than mechanically removing ice with a scraper.
