In recent years, the popularity of electric and hybrid cars has grown significantly. This is due not only to environmental concerns, but also to increasing restrictions imposed on owners of combustion cars and attractive subsidies for more ecological means of transport. Which is better - an electric car or a hybrid?

  • Hybrid and electric cars are more environmentally friendly than their combustion counterparts.
  • Hybrid or electric? Hybrids are better for longer journeys, while electrics are perfect for urban conditions.
  • When thinking about purchasing, it is worth taking into account subsidies and discounts in the Clean Transport Zone.

Electric and hybrid cars have their supporters and opponents. Such cars will not work for everyone, but in many cases they can provide greater comfort and save money. What are the differences between electric and hybrid cars? When is a hybrid a good choice? When is it better to go electric?

Hybrid vs. Electric Cars – Differences

Primarily hybrid cars are equipped with two sources of drive – a combustion engine and an electric engine. The electric unit supports the combustion engine, which improves the vehicle's fuel efficiency. What's more, a hybrid car is able to recover some energy, e.g. during braking (recuperation). In plug-in hybrids, there is also the possibility of charging the battery from a socket.

The situation is slightly different for electric cars. Such a car is powered solely by a battery. There is no combustion engine in such a car, which means zero exhaust emissions while driving. The battery is charged only from external energy sources (charging stations or home chargers).

Electric cars are more ecological than hybrids. However, it must be remembered that access to charging stations is still quite limited. After the battery runs out, you also have to spend at least a few dozen minutes to refill it, which forces stops on the route.

When will a hybrid car prove its worth?

Plug-in hybrid

Hybrid cars are a compromise between low emissions and long range. They are suitable for situations when you also want to use the vehicle on the road – especially when the distance is more than 300 km. Hybrid cars do not require stops for charging. They can be refueled in the same way as combustion models.

A hybrid will also be a good choice when:

  • access to charging stations in your area is limited,
  • you don't want to pay too much - electric cars are more expensive than hybrids,
  • you want the flexibility that two types of engines provide.

Hybrid cars are cheap to maintain, especially compared to classic combustion models. At the same time, they provide greater flexibility than electric cars, but are less ecological. They will work well for people who do not like drastic changes, but want to slightly reduce exhaust emissions and car maintenance costs.

An electric car will be a good choice if you use your vehicle mainly for short journeys. It will work well as a family car that is used for everyday commuting, shopping, or weekend and holiday trips. However, it will not be a good choice if you cover more than 300 km in a day and do not have time for a longer stop near a charger.

Electric cars will also suit your tastes if:

  • you care about eco-friendly driving – they do not emit any exhaust fumes,
  • you want to benefit from financing the purchase of a new car,
  • you don't want to worry about frequent visits to the service center,
  • you have a photovoltaic system at home to which you can connect an electric car charger – this way, charging your car will be free,
  • you want a quiet and smooth ride,
  • you want to move freely in clean transport zones,
  • you have good access to chargers – in the city, at work, etc.

Hybrid or electric — which is better?

In the end, what is better, electric or hybrid? Of course, everything depends on the individual needs of the user and the conditions in which they plan to use it. A hybrid may be a better solution for people who often travel longer distances and do not have constant access to charging stations - thanks to the combination of a combustion engine and an electric engine, it is more universal. On the other hand, an electric car will be perfect for everyday urban life, where its ecological, quiet operation and lack of exhaust emissions become unique advantages. When choosing between a hybrid and an electric car, it is worth considering lifestyle and the availability of charging infrastructure.

Hybrid vs. Electric Cars – Technology is Constantly Changing

Hybrid cars are currently a more flexible choice. They have fewer limitations than electric cars, but technology is changing very dynamically. Every year, new solutions appear on the market that are designed to increase the range of electric cars. When choosing a vehicle, it is also worth paying attention to legal restrictions related to exhaust emissions. Ecological cars are more future-proof - they can, for example, enter clean transport zones and are subject to attractive subsidies.
