With each passing day of March, a bigger smile appears on our faces. Winter is ending - at least according to the calendar - and with it the hassle of clearing snow from the car and scraping windows. The coming spring is also heralded by the Geneva Motor Show, where, like the first swallows, the premieres of the upcoming season appear.

Too many car debuts

This year, the organizers of the Geneva International Motor Show announced over 100 premiere cars. At first glance, it seems impossible, because we can't collect more than twenty of the car brands we see every day on the street. But international car shows are also an opportunity to present icons such as Bugatti, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Koenigsegg and Rolls-Royce to a wider audience. These brands also contribute to the mentioned list.

This also includes niche models such as the British Morgan or the Danish Zenvo, as well as design studios such as Pininfarina or Italdesign. On a side note, for their 50th anniversary, the Italians presented a two-person drone that connects to a four-wheeled chassis during landing. The rotors fly away and we move - or rather are driven - in an autonomous vehicle. Airbus and Audi are participating in this project.

For now, let's stick more tightly to the contact between the tire and the road surface. Among the most important new products this year "for Kowalski", I will mention the new Citroen C4 Cactus, Honda CR-V, the third generation of Kia Ceed, the extremely popular Mazda 6, Peugeot 508, the modernized Skoda Fabia, the hybrid Toyota Auris and the Volvo V60 station wagon. Among the "less popular" ones are the Audi A6, BMW X4, the electric Jaguar I-Pace and the hybrid Mercedes C-Class.

New from old

Three old/new brands conquer the pool of new products. Exactly a year ago, Renault presented the revived Alpine, this time you can see the production version of the A110 model and its high-performance version, the A110 GT4. Interestingly, one of the few showrooms of this brand in Europe is located in Katowice!

In turn, SEAT decided to separate the sports versions of Cupra from its offer. From now on, it is an independent brand with its own logo, although based on existing models. First up is the Ateca SUV, led by the Leon Cupra at the Geneva stand. But what attracts attention is the concept of the Cupra e-Racer racing car, of course with an electric drive.

Volvo also decided to take a similar step. Until now, the Polestar name was associated with a company that was authorized by the manufacturer to improve the performance of individual car models. By becoming a separate brand, they must meet a new challenge: creating electric limousines with a sporty flair. Looking at the body lines of the first project, a cry escapes us - (after all, we are in the French-speaking part of Switzerland) - chapeau bas!

Vehicle eraóin hybrid and electric

Virtually every stand has a hybrid or electric car. And these are increasingly often the debuting models electric cars. The exception to this rule is probably Dacia, Mazda and the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group.

However, there is no doubt that a revolution in the automotive world has taken place before our eyes. And whether we like it or not, we already live in times when classic drive units are supported or replaced by electric drives. Of course, such vehicles will not replace the cars currently in use overnight, but soon we will have no choice when buying a new one. Moreover, we are already at the threshold of the era of autonomous cars. As a driver who enjoys driving, this makes me reticent to technical innovations.

And the exhibition at the Volkswagen stand proves that this will happen soon. The new family of electric ID models will gradually replace the current offer. First of all, we have to say goodbye to... Golf, next will be the ID Crozz SUV and the ID Buzz van. Next to them, the ID Vizzion executive class limousine was presented. This one is supposed to be a connection electric vehicle with autonomous. And all this is supposed to happen by 2025! So in less than a decade!

Now let's look at Toyota. Of course, Lexus, which belongs to it, has been offering hybrids for a long time and the owner is following the same path. But a complete surprise at this year's Geneva show was the declaration of gradual abandonment of the production of models with diesel engines.

Bentley has not escaped from "electrification". The hybrid version of the Bentayga SUV debuted in Geneva.

Studio models are also moving in the same direction. After visiting the exhibition, Hyundai Auto Vision, Mazda Vision Coupe and Kai Concept, Nissan IMx KURO and Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo remain in the memory forever.

You can see it too

Visiting the exhibition in Geneva is within the car reach of every Polish driver. This year's edition will last until March 18 and the optimal date will be the last weekend. The most convenient way to get there is to take one of two highways - the A2 to Świecko is a more expensive option or the A4 to Zgorzelec. Then we go through Germany to Basel. Before entering a motorway in Switzerland, you must obtain a vignette for 40 francs.

You can also avoid this fee by choosing local roads through France, which surrounds Geneva on three sides. But in this case you have to take into account a longer and more tiring ride.

The Geneva car show takes place in the Palexpo exhibition complex, which we enter immediately from the highway. For our convenience, there are several parking lots in the immediate vicinity. An alternative is to travel by plane, and the walking trip from the airport will take just 10 minutes.

And if not this time, it may be worth thinking about a trip to next year's edition of the Geneva show. Or to the next important event in Europe, which will be the Paris Motor Show (October 4-14, 2018). Wait a minute, some of these premieres will be available in Poznań between April 5 and 8!
