HVO100 – new diesel fuel already in Poland

HVO100 is a new fuel for diesel engines, which is now available in Poland. It is supposed to be more ecological than classic diesel oil and improve air quality in cities. What do we know about the new biodiesel?
- HVO100 is already available in the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic and several other European countries.
- New biodiesel is produced from vegetable oils and fatty waste.
- The new fuel is not for everyone. Owners of older vehicles should avoid them.

What is HVO100?

After recently introduced E10 petrol It's time for a new fuel, HVO100. What is that? HVO100 is hydrorefined vegetable oil, i.e. a new eco-fuel that has reached the Vistula River. In other words, it's synthetic, renewable diesel. The fuel can be used in cars, trucks and other vehicles for commercial use. However, it is worth checking whether it is compatible with our engine.
The new biodiesel means up to 90% lower CO2 emissions

HVO100 is an eco-fuel that is intended to contribute to the decarbonization of transport. How? The fuel is produced from vegetable oils and fatty waste. Importantly, biodiesel does not negatively impact food production. For this reason the new fuel has a lower environmental impact than classic petroleum diesel. Biodiesel means up to 90% lower CO2 emissions! Additionally, it is compatible with the infrastructure. Due to all this, the new fuel refueled at the station is expected to have a positive impact on the air quality in cities.

Advantages and disadvantages of HVO100

Like any fuel, the new biodiesel has its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages
The new biodiesel has several big advantages over classic diesel fuel. It is primarily ecology and compatibility with existing infrastructure. Higher efficiency and lower engine wear are also important. In addition, there is lower fuel consumption.
Disadvantages
Like any fuel, the new biodiesel also has its drawbacks. Above all it is more expensive and less available. However, these problems may become less important. The growing interest in eco-fuel should translate into both a drop in prices and greater availability at stations. A bigger problem may be the impact on the engines in the long run. In addition, some cars are not adapted to the new fuel.
Availability of new biodiesel

Interestingly, it's not a new invention, and they have been produced in Europe since 2011. It is available at stations in the Nordic countries, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and the Czech Republic. The situation is different in Poland. Currently, we can refuel new fuel only at the station in Myszęcin, near the A2 motorway near Świebodzin. This should change soon, because Orlen also wants to introduce a new fuel.
Who can fill up with new fuel?

Not all drivers of diesel cars will refuel with the new fuel. Some manufacturers prohibit refueling HVO100. This applies primarily to older vehicles. Why? All because of possible damage to fuel systems and engines. You can check the list of compatible vehicles on the Deutsche Automobil Treuhand website.
The new biodiesel is an interesting alternative to classic diesel oil. Ecofuel means lower CO2 emissions and lower fuel consumption. However, it is worth checking whether the car is compatible with this biodiesel. Especially in the case of older vehicles.
