Running out of fuel can be a big problem – especially when you’re caught far from a gas station. For this reason, many conscious drivers buy reserve fuel canisters that they carry in their trunks. How to choose the right product?

  • Storing fuel is only legal in canisters that meet appropriate standards.
  • According to the regulations, fuel can be stored in the garage. It is prohibited to store it in the basement, attic, house or balcony.
  • Storing petrol or diesel fuel is possible in a plastic or metal canister.
  • Check which fuel canister to choose!

How to store fuel?

How to store fuel - pouring fuel into a canister

Primarily fuel storage should be done in a fuel canister. What is it? A fuel canister is a container in which fuel can be stored and transported. Importantly, the container must meet the appropriate standards in order to transport fuel in it. You cannot store gasoline or oil in ordinary bottles, winds or barrels not adapted for this purpose. This is not only dangerous due to the possibility of leakage, but also illegal.

It is worth remembering that improper storage of fuel may result in criminal liability.

When is it best to store fuel in a canister?

It is worth remembering that fuel storage in a canister can save you in many situations. What's more, an additional portion of fuel will also be a huge help for other drivers you meet on your way who will run out of it. However, in order to use the canister safely and for the amount of liquid collected in it to be enough to power the car, you need to choose the right model. It is worth remembering that the fuel tank should be tightly closed.

It is also worth using canisters when travelling to other countries where fuel is more expensive or when refuelling with cheaper fuel – for example, during promotions at petrol stations.

The fact is that storing gasoline in the garage is convenient. Of course, the same is true for oil. However, it is worth remembering that you have to do it in accordance with the regulations. How much petrol and oil can be stored in the garage?

  • Large garages (over 100 m2) – fuel can only be stored when needed to operate the vehicle. The fuel must be in retail-grade individual packaging;
  • Small detached garages (less than 100 m2) – if the garage is made of non-flammable materials, you can store up to 200 l of petrol or diesel oil.
  • Small home garage - in this case, you can store up to 60 liters of gasoline.

Can fuel be stored in a basement or attic?

Metal canister

Since fuel is a potentially dangerous substance, it is very important to do it according to the regulations. After all, it is the only way to be safe. Unfortunately, this means that you can't store fuel in the basement, in the attic, on the balcony or at home. It is worth remembering that the right conditions are key. Only they guarantee that the fuel will not lose its properties and the storage itself will be safe.

How long can you store petrol and diesel?

Gasoline Storage - Red Canister

You can guess that storage of gasoline or diesel fuel cannot last forever. But how long can they be stored? What is the fuel expiry date? As it turns out, the durability of fuels at gas stations is estimated at about 6 months. What happens later? In the case of petrol - hydration may occur, i.e. petrol settles at the bottom of the canister. It is not worth exceeding this date in the case of diesel fuel either, because anaerobic bacteria may precipitate.

Types of fuel canisters

Plastic and metal canisters are available on the market. The former are lightweight and cheap. They are usually used occasionally. Metal canisters are more durable, making them better for frequent use. However, it is worth remembering that such fuel tanks can rust.

Canisters come in different capacities. The most common capacities are 5, 10 and 20 litres. It is therefore worth considering your needs before choosing a canister so that it is not too small.

A canister is a great idea as a tool for storing fuel. Such containers will certainly come in handy in emergencies and during promotions at gas stations. They must be used in accordance with the regulations to maintain safety. It is worth remembering, however, that both petrol and diesel have their expiration date.
