How much time to re-register a 2023 car?
Drivers are constantly wondering how much time they have to re-register their car in specific cases after purchasing it. According to the rules Road Traffic Law this is 30 days from the date of purchase. This time will be counted from the date of purchase of a new car in Poland, as well as a used car registered in our country. The 30-day period also applies to vehicles purchased outside Poland. Let's then count it from the day it was brought into the country. There are also cases where it is counted from the admission for circulation by the Customs and Tax Service of a vehicle imported from the territory of a country that is not a member of the European Union.
Failure to re-register a car – what is the penalty?
As with any other act and legal regulations, failure to comply with the provisions results in criminal liability. The penalty for not registering a car is a financial penalty. Pursuant to Article 97 of the Petty Offenses Code, when the owner of a vehicle does not comply with applicable regulations, he may be obliged to pay a fine ranging from PLN 200 to PLN 1000. However, it often happens that the arrest of a driver who has not fulfilled this obligation results only in a reprimand or withholding of the registration certificate. It contains outdated data, which is the basis for taking it away from the driver. However, the obligation to re-register a car is to be more closely monitored by the services, and failure to do so will be punished more often.
Obligation to re-register a car – how to apply?
You already know how much time the new owner has to re-register the car. It is also worth finding out in advance how to properly submit an appropriate application. We submit it to the city hall or district office. We also attach additional documents, such as: proof of car ownership, your ID card, vehicle registration certificate with a valid periodic technical inspection, vehicle card and a document confirming the conclusion of compulsory third party liability insurance. Until now, you had to submit your old application to the communications department plates.
New license plates – do I have to replace them?
Do I have to re-register my car and replace the license plate? Until now, this depended on whether the vehicle was registered in the same city. If this was the case, there was no need to replace them with new ones. If we changed cities or even countries, we needed new license plates.
After January 31, 2022, the obligation to replace plates is abolished, but there are certain conditions. To keep your existing license plates and save PLN 80, you must submit an appropriate application. This will be possible even if the plates come from another part of Poland. A necessary condition for accepting the application is the current design and technical condition of the license plate itself. It cannot be damaged and should be legible. Therefore, it is worth mounting the boards using a special mounting frame. Attaching them directly to the car body does not look aesthetically pleasing. The frame provides additional protection against paint scratches and at the same time makes the car look much better.
What is the cost of re-registering a car in 2023?
This is not an obligation that you will not have to pay for. However, the penalty for not registering your car is much higher than the costs you will have to incur. If you buy a car in Poland, you will pay for re-registering it:
- for a temporary permit for 30 days – PLN 13,50,
- for a registration certificate – PLN 54,
- for legalization signs – PLN 12,50.
The total cost of registration with a temporary ID and without replacing the plates is PLN 80. If the plates are not legible or do not have a current design and you have to replace them, you will incur an additional cost of PLN 80. Unless you request individual plates, then their cost will be PLN 1000.
However, we will pay much more to re-register a vehicle purchased abroad. We must add the cost of issuing a VAT25 document (PLN 160), technical examination (PLN 100), translation (approx. PLN 150) and excise tax (3,1% or 18,6% of the car value).
New registration certificates – what has changed?
From May 2022, new registration certificates will come into force. The security features have changed and are now more difficult to counterfeit. The new pattern looks similar to the old one, the field layout is preserved, so at first glance you may not even notice the difference. However, it is made using a different technology. It is intended to provide better chemical protection, a two-tone watermark, and fibers visible in daylight and ultraviolet light. Numbering and personalization were done with a laser.
