Moisture is the enemy of every vehicle, but it is not only about body corrosion. Water has a negative impact on the car's electrical system. Lamps are particularly susceptible to its effects. So find out what to do if you notice fogged headlights in your car.

How do foggy car headlights occur?

The reasons for moisture collecting in a car lamp may be different. However, they usually concern the incompleteness of the headlight or its damage. If we look at its structure, it consists not only of a lampshade and a reflector, but also of an electrical installation, gaskets and various covers, as well as an air vent. These last three elements are designed to provide ventilation inside the lamp and isolate it from external conditions.

Very Various types of flaps, lids and other elements covering inspection holes are particularly important and protective light bulbs. Without them, moisture may get inside the lamp. All you need to do is let rain or condensation fall inside, drop by drop, over a long period of time snow.

It is also worth remembering that during operation, the lamp heats up to high temperatures and then cools down. As a result, water vapor may precipitate from the air inside. This is prevented by the ventilation that each headlamp is equipped with. The inconspicuous rubber tube on the top or side of the housing is designed to remove excess water vapor.

It may also happen that with age, the seals in the lamp lose their effectiveness and begin to leak moisture. Sometimes they can be replaced, but in many cases, especially in the case of new headlights, this may involve purchasing the entire component.

Yet another case will be mechanical damage to the lampshade or housing. They don't have to be big and visible at first glance, Micro-cracks are enough for water to get inside.

Does this pose a risk to the car's electrical system?

Any moisture in contact with the vehicle's electrical system is a hazard. In older cars, this may result in a fuse blowing, the lamp plugs getting dirty or the light switch breaking.

In new cars the issue is much more serious. Modern lamps are no longer just a few cables and a light bulb, but often also drivers, transducers and filaments that require large amounts of energy to operate. A short circuit in such a system may not only be dangerous, but also expensive – xenon, LED or laser bulbs cost several hundred or even several thousand zlotys. This is one of the reasons why it is better not to ignore moisture in the lamp.

Is moisture in the headlight a reason why my car may not pass MOT?

Yes, the diagnostician may pay attention to foggy headlights and issue a negative MOT result because of them. The efficiency of the lights in a vehicle is the first verified criterion for admitting a vehicle to traffic.

If the diagnostician recognizes this type of fault in your vehicle, information about the negative result is entered in the CEPIK system. technical inspection i the vehicle can no longer be driven on the road. This is quite a problem, because, according to the regulations, such a vehicle should leave the vehicle inspection station on a tow truck. A fault such as a steamy headlight may deprive you of your means of transport.

The vehicle owner has 14 days to remove any identified irregularities. Once this is done, he or she must go again to the same District Vehicle Inspection Station, where the diagnostician will check only those defects for which the vehicle was previously excluded from traffic.

However, problems at the diagnostic station are the least of your worries. If any irregularities are found the registration certificate may also be retained by the Police or the Road Transport Inspectorate, which will involve the need to transport the vehicle on a tow truck.

The best ways to get water out of the lamp

Car headlights

There is no universal way to dry a headlight. If moisture has already appeared in it, even after drying it may evaporate again, so it is crucial to find the cause.

The simplest solution, of course, is to replace the lamp, which is sometimes expensive. However, it is worth examining it first to look for cracks. You should also verify the completeness of seals and flaps covering the bulbs and electrical installation. In the case of old lamps, glass lampshade, you can try to take them apart and glue them again with a special glue resistant to high temperatures. However, this does not guarantee that the situation will improve. Sometimes it is needed comprehensive headlight regeneration.

How to prevent water from collecting on lamps?

Preventing moisture in the headlights should consist in regular inspection of the completeness of the lamp: seals, caps, and the patency of the air vents. In modern cars, access to the lights is sometimes through the wheel arch, in which special curtains are installed to hide the inspection holes. The absence of these covers may result in splashing reflector from the inside with water while driving. This is worth paying attention to.

It is good practice to check the car's lighting on an ongoing basis and repair any faults as soon as possible.
