Newer cars use many innovative technologies to increase driver safety and minimize the risk of accidents. Among them, it is worth mentioning the FCW system, i.e. collision warning. How does it work and in what cars can it be found?

What is the FCW system?

Let's start from the beginning, and what it actually is. Well FCW is a forward collision warning system. The system includes cameras that record cars moving in adjacent lanes and in front. How does it work? This technology assesses the distance and displays warnings when it becomes dangerously close. The system works based on the signal GPS and it is on this basis that it determines the optimal value.

How does forward collision warning work?

Primarily FCW scans the road in front of the car. It then analyzes the data and looks for signals that indicate a risk of collision. This system works not only when approaching vehicles, but also when approaching other obstacles - e.g. barriers around the road.

In most cars, the system activates automatically when the speed exceeds approximately 48 km/h. Importantly, this technology can be turned off if it is too irritating to the driver. The system not only displays warnings on the screen, but also emits an audible alert.

Additional functions of the collision warning system

The system detects a potential threat when it is still relatively far away, so the driver will have time to make the appropriate maneuver. However, if the person driving the car does not react (e.g. by changing lanes or stopping the car) and the braking distance is very short, the technology may work in yet another way. In cars where it is compatible with ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), will cause the car to stop.

Forward Collision Warning System - Be careful

Primarily collision warning system in a car does not relieve the driver of his obligation to exercise caution. He still has to be alert, and modern technologies used in the car only help him in this. Even when using this system, you must obey speed limits, be careful during inclement weather and drive safely.

Warning: Unfortunately, the collision warning system does not always work with 100% efficiency. It relies on cameras, so its functionality may be limited in poor visibility.

In what situations does the FCW system activate?

Car collision warning system starts at higher speeds. Therefore, there is no risk that it will display warnings, e.g. when driving in a parking lot or in a city traffic jam. Most often, it starts working only when driving on a highway or expressway.

When your car starts to approach the vehicle in front too closely while driving at high speed, the system may display a warning. It works especially when the car in front slows down or brakes suddenly. The system will warn you to also slow down or change lanes. Thanks to this, the risk of hitting the car in front is significantly lower.

Is the FCW system in all cars?

Some safety systems are mandatory and must be installed in all cars driving in European Union countries. It's different in this case because a forward collision warning system is optional. Only some brands decide to use it, such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Lexus, Audi, Honda, Nissan or Toyota. However, it is worth remembering that this technology is only available in some car models of these companies - mainly the more expensive ones.
