A road map helps us reach our destination without complications. Today's maps are mainly GPS navigators. We have become accustomed to easy navigation from our phone or car navigator. Meanwhile, the classic map was discontinued. Many people even go a step further. She is often thrown out of the car. At best, it ends up somewhere at the bottom of the glove compartment. This is what prudent drivers usually do - just in case. These are the words that are worth taking a closer look at. Why do prudent drivers usually have a copy of the map in book form? That is the question!

Car map, book edition or GPS navigation?

As modern people, we most often choose electronic satellite navigation. We often trust her implicitly. However, life often verifies this approach. Electronic navigation can be unreliable and everyone who has used it has experienced this at least once.

Electronics of all types are extremely sensitive to shocks and the resulting damage. It also doesn't work without a power source. It may discharge or crash when you least expect it. Damaged navigation will no longer help us. That is why the book map is the leader in this field.

Its advantages are unimaginable, even though they are already underestimated by many. The most important ones include:

  • reliability,
  • resistance to mechanical damage - even a torn or flooded map, if the roads are visible on it, is completely usable,
  • doesn't need power,
  • is much cheaper than a GPS navigator,
  • contains old, even unused routes that the electronic map may no longer show,
  • small weight and dimensions.

These few advantages of a paper road map show us its superiority over electronic maps. Defenders, of course GPS navigators They will stand their ground, but what will they do when the electronics start to fail?

Unlike navigators, faults do not affect book maps. If the paper is properly cared for, it does not get damaged and the maps remain legible. In one word, such a map will never disappoint us. Unless we forget to take it from home.

What should you remember when buying a road map?

It is also a good idea to carry a compass in your car along with a map. This will make using traditional maps in remote areas much more enjoyable. It will also be useful for hiking. It is also worth remembering that there are no contraindications to using a traditional car map alternately with navigation, e.g. on a phone.

However, you should remember to pay attention to a few things when purchasing a paper road map. We can buy such maps almost everywhere. They are available in some shops, post offices and tourist service points. However, it is worth knowing that the best maps can be found in bookstores and automotive equipment stores. There is a huge selection to choose from, so it's good to know what to look out for.

Paper road map it should, above all, be up-to-date. Therefore, it is worth replacing it from time to time. When using old copies, we must be aware that some new paths will not be found there. Of course, the map must also be legible.

The most important thing is scale!

If you have a road map at hand, take it and check its scale. When buying a map, this is the first thing you should pay attention to. It is the scale that translates into the accuracy of the map. As you know, the more accurate the map, the better!

The principle of reading the scale, contrary to appearances, is simple. The smaller the number on the scale, the greater the accuracy of the map. To illustrate, let's give an example in which we have two maps:

  • one on a scale of 1:25,
  • the second one on a scale of 1:25.

A map with a scale of 1:25 will be more accurate. Why? Because the scale tells us that every 000 cm on this map corresponds to 1 meters. At a scale of 250:1, each 25 cm of the map is 000 km! Therefore, the smaller the number on the scale, the more accurate the map is. In other words, to switch from the scale to meters, we must remove the last two zeros. This is the easiest way to convert.

Is the road map a thing of the past?

It is definitely worth taking a current road map with you in paper form. It does not take up too much space and may prove irreplaceable when the navigation system fails. Lack of navigator coverage, outdated maps and driving in unknown terrain are sufficient reasons to have a classic car map.

A road map can often save the skin of a new tramp. Moreover, you can also look at it from a different perspective. With a map, you can actively plan the goals of your trip and focus on spontaneity. Together with the map, you can optimally plan your day. The book edition gives you more freedom when planning tourist trips.

The navigator will show you the way, but first you have to tell him the destination in the form of an exact address. You can browse the map in the book edition as you wish. Another of its advantages is revealed here. Namely, you can find additional inspirations, such as sightseeing detours and interesting places. Only with a road map you can achieve this.

Podsumowując… – To sum up…

The advantages of a road map could be listed endlessly. It becomes clear that it is not just an item that is useful from time to time. Finally, it is worth adding that a map, even if rarely used and often considered as unnecessary ballast in the car, can be a godsend. It is often lighter than a GPS navigator, so there is no reason not to have it close to you.

You can see now that the road map will be popular for a long time. Invest in at least one copy and you will see its unparalleled advantages. Even in the era of rapidly advancing technological development.
